Regenerative Procedures

Regenerative Procedures: Rebuilding Your Oral Health

Periodontal disease is a serious progressive condition that can ultimately lead to tooth loss if left untreated. This disease develops when bacterial infections in your gum pockets cause the bone and gum tissue to gradually recede away from your teeth. As the infection progresses, both the quality and quantity of your bone and gum tissue diminish significantly as gum pockets continue to deepen.

The good news is that with prompt diagnosis and effective regenerative procedures, we can halt disease progression and save your natural teeth. These advanced treatments offer hope for restoring your oral health even when significant damage has already occurred.

We offer a comprehensive range of regenerative dental procedures designed to restore health to your gums, bone, and teeth. Here are the most commonly used regenerative treatments that can transform your oral health:

Bone Regeneration: Rebuilding Your Foundation

Strong, adequate jawbone is essential for successful dental implants and other restorative procedures. When periodontal disease has compromised your jawbone, making it too thin to support implants, bone regeneration (or bone grafting) offers an excellent solution for promoting new growth and strengthening your jaw structure.

The Bone Grafting Process

During this procedure, we obtain high-quality bone grafting material either from another area of your body or from a trusted bone bank. We gently fold back your gum tissue and create a precise opening in the jawbone where the grafting material is carefully packed to optimize integration.

A specialized membrane is placed to maintain the proper shape of your new bone as it develops. We may also apply tissue-stimulating proteins and platelet-rich growth factors to accelerate healing and enhance the regeneration process. The surgical site is then meticulously sutured and protected with healing materials.

Over time, your bone will naturally regenerate and develop the strength needed to successfully support dental implants, giving you a solid foundation for your new teeth.

Gum Tissue Regeneration: Restoring Your Smile's Beauty

Gum tissue regeneration is typically accomplished through sophisticated gum grafting techniques. When gum tissue has been lost due to periodontal disease, your smile may appear uneven, expose tooth roots, or look less attractive than before. Gum grafting aims to create a symmetrical, healthy gum line while covering exposed tooth roots and restoring optimal gum health.

The Gum Grafting Procedure

We begin by carefully removing a small strip of healthy tissue from the roof of your mouth. This donor tissue is then precisely placed within a split-thickness incision at the recipient site where new gum tissue is needed.

The surgical site is covered with a protective membrane that promotes healthy tissue regeneration. We enhance the healing process by applying platelet-rich growth factors and tissue-stimulating proteins before suturing the area closed. As healing progresses, the soft tissue surrounding your teeth naturally regenerates, creating a healthy, attractive smile you can feel confident about.

Pocket Reduction Surgery: Eliminating Bacterial Hideouts

The primary goal of pocket reduction surgery is to significantly reduce the depth of gum pockets, making it much more difficult for harmful bacteria to invade and damage your gum tissue. This procedure creates an environment where your gums can heal properly and maintain long-term health.

The Treatment Process

Under comfortable local anesthesia, we gently fold back your gum tissue from the teeth to access the subgingival area for thorough cleaning. We may need to perform extensive cleaning to completely remove all plaque, debris, and tartar deposits from below your gum line—areas that are impossible to clean with regular home care.

After cleaning, we apply antimicrobial agents to the affected areas to eliminate any remaining bacteria. The surgical site is then carefully sutured closed. Pocket reduction surgery is highly effective at stopping tissue loss and promoting the natural healing of your gums, giving you a fresh start toward optimal oral health.

Scaling and Root Planing: Deep Cleaning for Healing

Scaling and root planing work together as a powerful non-surgical treatment to address periodontal infection at its source.

Scaling Treatment

Scaling involves the meticulous removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) from the supragingival region above your gum line. While this treatment is often part of routine professional cleanings, it becomes more intensive when addressing periodontal disease. We perform this procedure under local anesthesia to ensure your complete comfort.

Root Planing Process

Root planing focuses on the subgingival region below your gum line, where the most dangerous bacteria typically hide. We carefully remove tartar and bacterial toxins, then smooth the tooth root surfaces to promote optimal healing in your gum tissue.

This smoothing process, called planing, creates clean surfaces that prevent bacteria from easily recolonizing these areas. When scaling and root planing successfully eliminate the infection, surgical intervention may not be necessary. However, if the infection persists, we may recommend additional surgical measures to ensure complete healing.
