Periodontics

Understanding Periodontics: Specialized Gum and Bone Care

The term "periodontics" refers to the dental specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease affecting the gums and jawbone.

The doctors who provide care for your gums and jawbone are "periodontists" – and they are able to help their patients after completing several years of additional specialized dental training. These doctors are dedicated to maintaining the function, health, and aesthetics of your jawbone and surrounding tissues.

Reasons for Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that begins with mild gum inflammation called gingivitis. It's the leading cause of tooth loss in adults living in the developed world and should be taken very seriously. Periodontal disease (often called gum disease) is typically characterized by red, swollen, painful, or bleeding gums, though in some cases it may have no noticeable symptoms.

Periodontal disease generally begins when bacteria living in plaque cause an infection in the tissues surrounding your teeth, making them irritated and painful. Over time, this infection will cause the jawbone to recede and teeth to become loose.

Common Situations Requiring Periodontal Treatment:

Moderate to Advanced Gum Disease – This occurs when gums are bleeding, swollen, or red around most teeth, and the jawbone has begun to recede.

Localized Gum Recession – The infection that leads to moderate or advanced gum disease often begins in one specific area. Gum recession may also result from over-brushing with hard-bristle brushes or from improperly positioned teeth. Immediate treatment is essential to prevent further spreading.

Before Crown Lengthening – Your periodontist may need to lengthen the crown of a tooth by removing surrounding soft tissue to provide greater tooth exposure.

Ridge Augmentation – This procedure, often called "recontouring," may be necessary to correct an uneven gum line. Before beginning treatment, any bacterial infections and periodontitis must first be addressed.

Treatment Approaches

For Mild to Moderate Periodontal Problems: The periodontist's focus will be on eliminating the underlying bacterial infection and providing guidance on the most appropriate home cleaning methods.

Deep Scaling Treatment: Sometimes deep scaling is necessary to remove bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar) from your teeth and tissues.

Advanced Cases: When periodontal disease is advanced and the jawbone has receded significantly, more intensive cleaning may be recommended. Loose teeth that cannot be saved will need to be removed.

Dental Implant Expertise: Periodontists are trained in all aspects of dental implant procedures, which can restore full functionality to your mouth when teeth have been affected by periodontitis.

The Importance of Early Intervention

Because periodontal disease is progressive, it's essential to remove bacterial and calculus buildup to halt the spread of infection. Your periodontist will be happy to advise you on effective cleaning methods and treatment options tailored to your specific needs.

Early detection and treatment are key to preserving your natural teeth and maintaining optimal oral health.
